Oil Sands

Welcome to Alberta's Oil Sands the third-largest proven crude oil reserve in the world, next to Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Through responsible development, advancement of technology and significant investment, the Government of Alberta in conjunction with industry seeks to enhance Alberta's role as a world-leading energy supplier. New projects are being added every year and production is expected to increase from 1.31 million barrels per day in 2008 to 3 million barrels per day in 2018, keeping pace with demand and providing a sound economic basis for the future.

If you are new to Oil Sands, you may want to start with About Oil Sands, or find a wealth of information by navigating via the menu on the left of the page.

The Oil Sands Strategy and Operations Division of Alberta Energy provides administrative and regulatory services for Oil Sands Royalty Regulations, Oil Sands Tenure Regulation, and Crown and individual agreements to ensure that appropriate royalties and rentals are calculated and collected for the benefit of the people of Alberta.

Daily operations include administration of public offerings, agreements, rent, as well as review and approval of applications for oil sands projects, monitoring existing operations, economic impact assessments, development of business rules and royalty revenue forecasts. The Division maintains a staff of analysts, administrators, engineers, economists and business experts to ensure the people of Alberta are compensated fairly for this important natural resource.
